A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that I was thinking up ways that we could raise some money to help conserve three of Dickens's manuscripts.
Here's what I've come up with: December will be the first-ever Dickensblog Pledge Drive Month! Hold on, don't change the channel, I promise this won't be nearly as annoying as PBS pledge drives. There won't even be any tote bags.
Here's how it'll work. (If you've ever seen or participated in a fanfic auction, some of this will sound familiar. It's a similar concept.)
If you're a writer, artist, or any kind of crafty person and would like to help out, please leave a comment under this post letting us know what kind of work you'd be willing to donate. It might be fanfics, icons, drawings, Christmas ornaments -- anything Dickens-related that you want to write or make.
Then I'll contact you and we'll discuss what kind of offer you want to make and what you want to charge. No need to put your e-mail address in the body of your comment -- I see them all in TypePad.
Every few days in December, I'll post someone's offer on the blog. A typical offer might look like this:
"So-and-so will write a fanfic based on the Dickens novel of your choice. A drabble will be $3; a double drabble will be $5; anything longer will be $8."
Anyone who wants a fanfic by So-and-so can then leave a comment saying which novel they want it based on, and what length. (Offers can be more specific than that, if you want -- it can be a fanfic or artwork that's romantic, or funny, or dramatic, or about a certain character or couple or family, or whatever. Or you can leave all that up to the various buyers. No R-rated or slash, please. This is a PG-13 kind of a blog.)
There'll probably be other types of offers too. I may auction off a few Dickens-related items to the highest bidder.
When a transaction is made between a seller and a buyer, the buyer will send the money to me via PayPal -- or check if necessary -- and I'll collect it all to donate to the Victoria and Albert Museum for their conservation project. I'll keep you all periodically informed of how much we're raising, and we'll send the money at the end of the month.
If you want to be a participant in this project, please make sure you actually have time to do the fanfics or the art. I know December is a busy month, so if you can participate during one part of the month but not another, be sure to let me know that, so that I'll know when to put your offer up.
Let me know if you have any questions. And if you want to donate something, go ahead and leave a comment here!
