According to biographer Scott Eyman, who was interviewed on TCM tonight, one of the roles that the young John Wayne wanted to play was Sydney Carton.
"It is a far, far better thing that I do, pilgrim . . ."

Me too. :-) I've always had a soft spot for John Wayne -- he's one of my dad's favorite actors. And I'm impressed to know he had such good taste!

That's great! :D Too bad he wasn't in any adaptations. I can definitely see him playing a "character" role, like Magwitch.
