I think Dickens would have approved of this depiction of the factory. It looks like something out of one of the lower circles of Dante’s Inferno. The Micawbers’ house, on the other hand, seems a bit too nice. But the Micawbers themselves are perfect. And Daniel Radcliffe is little short of brilliant here, especially when bargaining with the pawnbroker like an old hand. Not surprising that he would “go far.”
The robbery and walk to Dover are really hard to watch. This sort of thing is exactly why I can’t bring myself to watch Slumdog Millionaire, no matter how many people recommend it. I can’t even stand to see a little boy getting his things stolen; Lord knows what would happen if I had to watch some of the things that happen to kids in that one.
It’s marvelous to see Maggie Smith again! I LOVE that they kept in Aunt Betsey’s falling down. Mr. Dick looks a little too much like Humpty Dumpty, but he’s very good.
And I really want to know where they got that wallpaper with the birds. That is cool. Even the Murdstones can’t succeed in making that room look dark. And Maggie rocks that scene with the two of them (if I may speak so familiarly of a Dame of the British Empire).
I think this is the first David Copperfield adaptation I’ve seen, and I was wondering if it was possible to find someone who could convincingly play Uriah Heep in all his longness and leanness and disgustingness. Holy cow, they sure did.
And we’re at the end of Part 1, and I think I’ll stop there for tonight, although I believe PBS has finished up by now. I’ll try to get to the rest later this week, or early next week.
