I would also like to state for the record that Samuel Howe was married to Julia Ward Howe, the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. There was no way to include this fact in the narrative without getting badly off-topic, but researching their accomplishments certainly left me with the conviction that they were a remarkably talented couple.

This was a great guest entry - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I love "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"! I had no idea she was married to Samuel Howe.
Laura Bridgman was quite a remarkable person herself (and Helen Keller did get to meet her once), though it's very possible that few people now would have ever heard of her without her having made an impact on Helen Keller. Interesting, that.

I read about Dickens trip to America before, but never any details. Just what they say in biographies of Dickens.

Wonderful. I never heard of Laura Bridger until today. I'm 56 yrs old and have studied Helen Keller so my life. I have worked with a special needs child for 9 yrs now. Non verbal autistic\ downs can see and hear. This is very interesting to me.
