Thomas Maloney of The Guardian lists Sydney Carton's death as one of the best fictional deaths, though he finds the character's "honorable" reflections not quite believable. (Honestly, if you can't think honorable thoughts when you're about to die, I don't know when you can think them.)

Well, that's rather cynical... If we don't believe Sydney, then it would kind of undermine the whole story.
