Excellent article. I feel like adaptations of Dickens' Carol have been getting gloomier. After seeing the trailer for the Guy Pearce version, I had ZERO interest in watching it. It looked gritty for the sake of being gritty, and nothing else. This article confirmed my suspicions.

Dickens does explore the darkness, but he always brings humor and hope and light. Screen-writers ought to have more respect for his spirit.
